2 days Akagera National Park – Rwanda Wildlife Safaris

The 2-days wildlife holiday in Rwanda’s legendary Akagera National Park will offer you the ultimate game viewing in one of East Africa’s best wildlife Parks. Akagera is the only savannah park that Rwanda has – it’s the only place in the country eligible for game drives. The park is home to several wildlife species as well as bird species, including the popular big five of Africa – Lions, Buffaloes, Savannah Elephants, Leopards, and Rhinos together with many other big mammals like Rothschild’s Giraffes, Zebras, and Hippos, which will provide for great photographic moments. Below is an ideal two day itinerary for visiting Rwanda’s only savannah Park – Akagera:

Day 1: Transfer to Akagera National Park

Very early in the morning you will leave the Kigali International Airport or any hotel in Kigali right after your breakfast; the driver-guide will pick you up from your hotel or airport where he will drop you at the end of the trip or to the airport, depending on where you prefer.

Akagera national park is about a two and half hours’ drive from the Kigali Airport but stopovers along the way may prolong the journey. With the beautiful landscaper en route to the park, feel free to ask the guide for stopovers to capture some photos. Reaching the park, you will proceed to your booked accommodation after a short evening game drive, where you will spot some of the Park’s inhabitants, and then check in.

After checking in, you will go for lunch at the lodge’s restaurant and later take an evening boat t cruise on Lake Ihema spotting numerous wildlife species like Hippos and crocodiles in the water or on the shores.

Day 2: Morning Game Drives and Return to the Airport

You will wake up in the early morning and drive to the jungle right after breakfast for a breathtaking morning game drive in Akagera national park. Reaching in the jungle, you will be searching for the big mammals like Elephants, Giraffes, Buffaloes, Lions, Rhinos, and several Antelope species. However, since nature is always difficult to predict, it’s not a guarantee that you will see each and everything you may need to see.

Though if your flight is in the late hours, after the morning game drive you can drive back to the lodge for lunch and then return back in the jungle for an evening game drive to try looking for some of the species you will have missed in the morning. The park is not only suitable for wildlife lover but for birding enthusiasts as well, with over 500 bird species in the park. After the evening game drive, you will return back to Kigali and visit the city’s genocide memorial sites as you wait for your flight back home.
