Rwanda is one of the only three countries still residing the endangered mountain gorillas, inhabited in its Volcanoes National Park. Of course, the highlight of any safari to this beautiful country is a visit to the Volcanoes Park in the northern province of Rwanda. A 3-day visit to the Park will offer you a rare opportunity of trekking mountain gorillas, and golden monkeys. Below is a well-designed itinerary of 3 days of gorilla trekking and golden monkey trekking in Volcanoes National Park.

Day 1: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Since Volcanoes National Park is just a 2 hours drive from the airport – Kigali International Airport, you may not rush to drive to the Park if you reach earlier at the airport. You may decide to first go for a brief Kigali City Tour that should last anywhere between 1-3 hours after which you will transfer to Kinigi through Musanze district for the next days of your Gorilla and Golden Monkey Tour.

In Kigali, you can visit the Kigali Memorial Centre and some of the city’s other museums and markets. After that, you will have lunch and then drive to the Park for check in at the lodge as you wait for dinner and the overnight.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking

You will have an early morning breakfast at the lodge’s restaurant and then after you drive to the Kinigi briefing area where you will be briefed about the activity – gorilla trekking. After briefing, you will then enter the forest to trek for these precious creatures which can last for 45 minutes to 6 hours, depending on where they might have spent their previous night.

When you meet the gorillas, you will only spend one magical hour with them but attaining long-lasting memories from it. After successfully trekking the gorillas, you will ‘definitely’ happily drive back to your lodge for lunch.

In the evening, you will visit the Iby’iwachu cultural village for local musical performances by a local musical cultural troupe, summing up your day satisfactorily. After the cultural display, you will go back to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Golden Monkey Trekking, Back to Airport

Very early in the morning, you will first have breakfast before driving back to the Park headquarters for briefing about the golden monkey activity. After briefing, and with the aid of experienced park rangers, you will head to the park open fields to start tracking the beautiful Golden Monkeys.

Golden Monkey trekking takes between 1-2 hours after which you will return to your lodge to pack up your belongings and drive back to Kigali for your flight back home.
