Mountain Gorilla Trekking are some of the most exciting safari activity in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable forest in Uganda. These tours attract visitors all year round to these destinations to come and take a glimpse. With such demand, efforts have been put forward in line with conservation. Gorilla permits have increased in price in recent years so that these creatures are preserved for more generations.
In Rwanda, a Gorilla permit costs 1500 dollars per person. This is because the mountain gorillas and their habitats have to be protected by limited visits to avoid any frequent contact with humans. Volcanoes National Park is part of the great Virunga conservation area and is estimated to have over 600 Mountain Gorillas of which 200 individuals are under habituated families for visitors to trek.
On the other side of Uganda in Bwindi National Park, the park with an area of 365 square kilometres, permits cost 800 dollars for each individual. Bwindi hosts over 400 gorillas and it has 26 gorilla families ready to trekkers. With 4 sections, Bwindi forest stands at number one of the top destinations for Gorilla trekking in the region. Mgahinga National Park on the slopes of Mount Muhabura is another gorilla destination with one habituated gorilla group. This is common for short trips from Kigali or Kisoro.
What to bring for Mountain Gorilla Trekking
Mountain Gorillas live in the mountainous forests of Bwindi and Virunga conservation areas. These thick forests at times are harsh to go through, that’s why it is recommended to carry some gear while trekking these include;
- A raincoat; Rain is unpredictable
- Long-sleeved clothes (Shirts and trousers)
- Cloves and face masks – to avoid contaminating Gorillas
- Gutters to protect from red termites
- Hiking boots – the forests are sleperly at times
- Packed lunch and bottled water – time spent in the forest is unpredictable
